The big thing… Google does updates all the time. They do “CORE” algorithm updates about 2x a year. Last year there were some major updates that happened and a few of them got reverted. Ex: Character count for meta descriptions went up from 180 characters to 300 characters, then Google dropped it back down.
The reason for Google updates is that people, businesses and websites are always trying to “cheat” the system with finding loopholes to get their websites to rank on the first page and in the top position. Because of that, Google must stay ahead of it and change algorithms so that spammy websites don’t rank higher than websites that have the real information that a Google user wants.
SEO experts like ourselves have to stay up to date on these trends so that we can make tweaks to content, metadata, how we structure and write content, etc. so that our client’s website stays compliant with what Google wants.
Google has a 200pt checklist on how it ranks your website. Every time you follow their “rules” your website has the potential to increase in ranking. Every time you go against their best practices… well, your ranking will fall. You can only go so long without paying attention to your website and the local content that is on it. When is the last time that you wrote (or had someone) write local & unique content for your website that was conversational, accurate and relevant?
Remember: Google’s reputation is getting ME their customer to my ULTIMATE destination as quickly as possible and if they don’t do that…We will stop using this search engine.
